What to see and do in Aigües

Aigües
Village
Aigües, or Aguas de Busot, is the smallest municipality in L'Alacantí, in the province of Alicante, with 1,199 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the aquifers that emerge on the eastern slope of the Cabezón de Oro; until 1916 it was simply called Aguas, and it later added the suffix “de Busot” to distinguish it from a locality of the same name now absorbed by Loporzano. Incorporated into Castile during the Christian conquest, it passed to the Kingdom of Valencia in 1296; under the Treaty of Almizra, the border between Aragon and Castile ran along the ravine that still bears its name today, which led to the building of a castle of which only the keep still stands. Felipe V granted it the title of town during the War of the Spanish Succession for its Bourbon allegiance.
Festivities of Aigües
Activity
The Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen marks Aigües's patronal festivities, the smallest municipality in L'Alacantí, whose Plaza de la Iglesia concentrates much of the village's religious heritage.
Aguas de Busot Spa
Curiosity
The Aguas de Busot spa, with thermal waters known since Roman and Muslim times, was built in the 19th century on baths acquired by the Countess of Torrellano in 1816, which already enjoyed some prestige by the middle of that century. In 1936 it was turned into a Patronazgo Infantil Antituberculoso, and after the Civil War it was bought by the State and resumed operating as a spa. The name of the municipality, Aguas until 1916, comes precisely from the aquifers that gave rise to these thermal springs. The building is currently undergoing restoration.
Tower of el Homenaje del Castillo de Aigües
Monument
The only standing remnant of the medieval castle that rose beside Aigües, on the old frontier line between Castile and the Kingdom of Valencia, with views over the coast and the market gardens.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Carmen de Aigües
Monument
A hermitage on the edge of the small town centre of Aigües, whose Plaza de la Iglesia and calle Mayor bring together the religious heritage of the smallest municipality of l'Alacantí.
Dry-farmed oil and almond
Food and drink
The terraced fields of the district combine olive and almond, the two crops that withstand the lack of water. The oil is pressed in mills of the comarca between November and January and the almond feeds the turrón workshops of the neighbouring towns.
