La Nucia
Village
La Nucia is a municipality in La Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, north of Benidorm, with 19,121 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Arabic Naziha, “delightful”; it was a hamlet given in 1271 by James I to Beltrán de Bellpuig, and at the start of the 17th century it formed part of the barony of Polop. It became an independent municipality in 1705, and during the 18th century its parish church, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, was built. Its population, which reached 4,998 inhabitants in 1845, fell to 1,493 in 1922 due to emigration to Algiers and Oran, and recovered from the 1970s onwards. It preserves the hermitage of Saint Raphael, completed in 1888, and the hermitage of Saint Vincent Ferrer, from 1803.
Festivities of la Nucia
Activity
La Nucia's Festes d'Agost, from the 14th to the 18th of August, honor the Virgen de la Asunción and San Roque, while the festivities of San Rafael, on the third weekend of September, include the auction of the saint's carrying platform and ribbons at his hermitage.

The hermitage of San Rafael in La Nucia (La Marina Baixa), with a Latin-cross plan and measuring 15.16 by 5.75 metres, was completed in 1888 at its present site, within the town centre and surrounded by a garden of cypresses. It houses a distinctive image of San Rafael dressed as a traditional pilgrim of Compostela, the work of the post-war Valencian religious sculptor José María Ponsoda, intended to symbolise the saint as patron of walkers, since La Nucia was a place of passage toward the inland areas.
