L'Alfàs del Pi
Village
L'Alfàs del Pi is a municipality in La Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, with 20,053 inhabitants, of whom around 56% are of foreign nationality, on the Mediterranean coast at the foot of the Sierra Helada. Its name comes from the Arabic al-faḥṣ, “the sown field”; it was called Alfaz until 1877, El Alfaz del Pino until 1887 and Alfaz del Pí from 1902. It arose from the founding charter granted by the Baron of Polop in 1786, when it was a scattered stretch of countryside along the coastal road, and was transformed from the 1960s onwards by a Norwegian community that came to have its own school, church and consulate. In its municipal area are the Roman villa of l'Albir, with baths among the best preserved in the province, and the Albir lighthouse, on the Serra Gelada.
Festivities of l'Alfàs del Pi
Activity
The patronal festivities of l'Alfàs del Pi are those of the Jubileo and the Santísimo Cristo del Buen Acierto, in La Marina Baixa (Alicante), and are held from 6 to 10 November. The programme combines the desfile del humor, correfocs and the flower offering with religious events: a procession and mass in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Buen Acierto, all in an atmosphere of great joy and colour.
Roman Villa of l'Albir
Nature
Archaeological site at l'Albir listed as the first open-air museum in the Comunitat Valenciana, with Roman baths considered among the best preserved in the province of Alicante.
Lighthouse of el Albir
Nature
The Punta Albir lighthouse, at the end of a paved track in the Serra Gelada, was inaugurated on 30 April 1863 to the 1855 design of engineer Antonio Molina, and is one of the most popular vantage points in l'Alfàs del Pi, with views over the bay of Altea and Benidorm. Nearby, restored, are the ruins of the Bombarda tower, a 16th-century, four-metre-high watchtower that gave warning of attacks by Barbary pirates. It was manned by two families until the 1960s, when its operation was mechanised, and it is reached by a 2.5-kilometre service road paved in 1963. Restored in 2011, it now houses an interpretation centre with collections on maritime culture and the Sierra Helada.
1786 settlement charter
Historical milestone
The baron of Polop granted in 1786 the carta puebla that gave rise to the town, until then a country district with scattered houses beside the coast road. The document shared out plots and obliged the colonists to build a dwelling and to plant vine and olive.
The Norwegian colony
Historical milestone
Since the 1960s a Norwegian community has settled in L'Alfàs del Pi, which came to have its own school, church and consular representation. Today much of the town's register is of foreign origin, and Norwegian is commonly heard in shops and services.
