Callosa d'en Sarrià
Village
Callosa d'en Sarrià is a municipality in La Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, next to the Fuentes del Algar, with 8,182 inhabitants who live mainly from tourism and agriculture. Located where the Algar and Guadalest rivers meet, surrounded by the Sierra de Aitana, Sierra de Bernia and Sierra de Chortá, it was a former Muslim hamlet that, after the Christian conquest, passed in 1290 to Admiral Bernardo de Sarriá, the place's first feudal lord, from whom it took its present name. The old town preserves part of its medieval layout, bounded by the 14th-century line of walls, which can still be crossed through one of its original gates, el Portal, next to the remains of the castle, built around 1395 and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2005.
Algar Springs
Nature
Fuentes del Algar is a site of waterfalls and natural pools located three kilometres from the town centre of Callosa d'en Sarrià (Alicante), between the municipalities of Bolulla and Tàrbena. The 1.5-kilometre circuit follows the course of the Algar river - whose name comes from Arabic and means “cave” - through a limestone gorge shaped by karst erosion, with abundant Mediterranean vegetation. In summer the flow comes mainly from the springs at its source, whose water is then pumped to the Guadalest reservoir. The site was declared a protected wetland by an agreement of the Valencian Government of 10 September 2002, and today functions as a theme park on the importance of water as an ecological, economic and cultural resource.

Callosa d'en Sarrià is known as the loquat capital, a fruit introduced into Spain in the 19th century by the Callosa-born Juan Bautista Berenguer, which made the municipality Spain's leading producer. It has its own regulatory council, that of the Denominación de Origen Níspero de Callosa de Ensarriá, which sets the quality standards for the fruit grown in the town and its district. The local farming cooperative supplies more than half of the loquats that Spain exports, with France and Italy as its main destination markets.
