Callosa d'en Sarrià, capital of the loquat Curiosity · Callosa d'en Sarrià, La Marina Baixa, Alicante Image of Callosa d'en Sarrià, not of the place itself. Callosa d'en Sarrià is known as the loquat capital, a fruit introduced into Spain in the 19th century by the Callosa-born Juan Bautista Berenguer, which made the municipality Spain's leading producer. It has its own regulatory council, that of the Denominación de Origen Níspero de Callosa de Ensarriá, which sets the quality standards for the fruit grown in the town and its district. The local farming cooperative supplies more than half of the loquats that Spain exports, with France and Italy as its main destination markets.
