What to see and do in Bolulla

Bolulla
Village
Bolulla is a municipality in the comarca of La Marina Baixa, in Alicante, nestled in the Tárbena valley at the foot of the Peña de Oro. It gives its name to the river which, together with that of Guadalest, forms the Algar river; its Estret de les Penyes, a ravine of crystal-clear water from limestone filtration, is one of the most popular descents in the comarca. It was a Muslim hamlet conquered by James I in 1254, which together with Alcia and Garx, now depopulated, formed the barony of Bolulla; it was left depopulated after the Morisco expulsion of 1609 and, despite reaching 1,074 inhabitants in the 19th century, emigration reduced it to 257 in 1991, before recovering in recent decades. It preserves the 18th-century parish church and, on the Peña del Castellet, the remains of the castle of Garx. It has 490 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Bolulla River
Nature
A river that gives its name to the municipality of Bolulla, in the province of Alicante, and that rises in the valley of Tárbena. With a length of approximately four kilometres and a highly intermittent flow, it empties into the Río Algar, of which it is a tributary and which, together with the Río de Guadalest, reaches the Mediterranean Sea at Altea.
Parish Church of Bolulla
Monument
Church of Bolulla, from the 18th century, declared a Bien de Relevancia Local (a heritage protection figure for locally significant assets in the Comunitat Valenciana) by the Generalitat Valenciana. Work was completed in 1732, and in 1822 the church was extended, taking up part of the square that had existed in front of the façade. The bell tower had to be restored in 1995, when it was at risk of collapse, and in 2015, on the initiative of the parish priest Francisco Javier Rodríguez, the interior was restored, recovering the original decoration of the vaults and arches.
Castle of Garx
Monument
The castle of Garx, on the Peña del Castellet (Bolulla, Alicante), together with Alcia, today also deserted, formed the old barony of Bolulla, of which only the remains of the settlement and of the medieval fortification that gave it its name survive.
Caves of Bolulla
Nature
Natural caves of La Pataeta and La Renyinyosa, accessible to visitors in the municipal district of Bolulla, next to the river of the same name and the Peña de Oro.
Church of Sant Josep de Bolulla
Monument
A parish church with a single nave and side chapels, with an 18th-century square bell tower, that houses a carved image of Saint Joseph. Construction was finished in 1732, and in 1822 it was extended, taking up part of the square in front of the church. It is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection status in the Region of Valencia). The bell tower was restored in 1995 owing to its deterioration, and in 2015 an interior restoration was carried out that recovered the decoration of the vaults and arches, also completing the ornamentation of the 1822 extension.
Narrows of the Rocks of Bolulla
Nature
Ravine of crystal-clear water filtered through limestone, part of the course of the Bolulla ravine formed by the meeting of the Canal and Negre ravines, very popular for canyoning.
Loquat with denomination of origin
Food and drink
The loquat of the Algar valley is covered by a designation of origin of its own. It is grown under netting to protect it from the wind and is picked by hand between April and June, when the skin reaches the orange tone and the flesh the right point of acidity.
