What to see and do in Murla

Murla
Village
Murla is a municipality in the Valencian Community, in the northeast of the province of Alicante, in the Valle de Pop, within the comarca of la Marina Alta, on mountainous terrain beside the Cotes ravine and the basin of the Jalón river. It has 574 inhabitants and lies 15 km from Denia. For centuries it was a Muslim alquería: in 1244, under the pact of la Jovada, Al-Azraq handed it over, together with the castle of Pop, to the Infante Alfonso, and in 1279 Peter III authorised its repopulation with thirty Muslim families, maintaining a mixed population of Christians and moriscos. The municipality, established in 1262, passed through several noble families until reaching the Count of Oliva and, later, the dukes of Osuna. It retains the hermitage of San Sebastián, from the late 16th century.

Standing above the Caballo Verde area, this hermitage is thought to have been built in the late 16th century and is one of Murla's leading heritage landmarks.
