What to see and do in Benidoleig

Benidoleig
Village
Benidoleig is a municipality in la Marina Alta, in the north of Alicante, with 1,245 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Arabic 'bani Dulaj', descendants of Doleig, and derives from an Arab alquería on the banks of the Girona river. After the conquest by James I, it passed through several lords until it obtained the title of barony in 1620; after the expulsion of the moriscos in 1609, when barely fifty families remained, it was repopulated with Majorcans in 1611, and gained independence from Orba in 1802. Its economy has revolved around citrus fruit and raisins for mistela. It is known for the Cova de les Calaveres, with an underground lagoon and the remains —from the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic— that give it its name, in which a 600 m gallery was opened between 1930 and 1950 to supply the village with water.
Cave of les Calaveres
Nature
A cave in Benidoleig that houses an underground lake and archaeological remains that give it its name; between 1930 and 1950 an artificial gallery some 600 metres long was dug to reach it and to supply the population with water. The cavity, 440 metres long, lies on the north side of the Seguili, next to the road linking Pedreguer with Benidoleig, and owes its name to an 18th-century caving expedition that found there the bone remains of twelve people. It has a flooded section, from 240 metres to the end, and a dry one fitted out for tourist visits. Various expeditions, including that of the prehistorian Henri Breuil, have found flint tools and other archaeological remains dating from the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic there.
