Benigembla
Village
Benigembla, also known as Benichembla, is a municipality of Arab origin situated in the Valle de Pop, in the comarca of la Marina Alta, with 590 inhabitants and at 314 metres altitude, between Denia and Benidorm. The Gorgos river, which rises near Facheca and flows into the sea at the port of Jávea, crosses its municipal area, surrounded by heights such as the Caballo Verde and the Morro d'en Serra, the highest point in the municipality at 1,001 metres. It shares with the neighbouring Vall d'Ebo the site of the Pla de Petracos, with Levantine and macroschematic rock art paintings more than 8,000 years old, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1998. It retains the church of San José, a neoclassical temple from the late 18th and early 19th centuries with a baroque bell tower, restored in 1994.
