Orba
Village
Orba is a municipality in la Marina Alta, in Alicante, situated in the valley through which the Girona river runs, between the plains to the north and the sierras of Migdia, la Solana and Seguili to the south. Its name comes from the Arabic Ur-Obia, 'place where water springs from the mountain', and points to a morisco past still perceptible in its tradition of pottery-making. Conquered by James I around 1238, who entrusted it to the knight Alfonso Berenguer Mercey, it later passed through various lordships until reaching the dukes of Gandía, of the House of Borgia. In 1609, on the eve of the morisco expulsion, the valley had 70 houses of new Christians, and it was left deserted that year; it was repopulated under a settlement charter on 9 July 1611. It retains the remains of El Castellet, a 13th-century Christian tower, and has 2,399 inhabitants (INE 2025).
