Sagra
Village
Sagra is a municipality in the northeast of Alicante, in the comarca of la Marina Alta, in the valley of La Rectoría traced by the Girona river towards the sea, with 441 inhabitants. A former Islamic alquería, in the 13th century it belonged successively to Juan Pérez de Cullera, Eximén Pérez de Tarazona, Pedro Jiménez de Ayerbe and, by a grant of 1299, Raimundo Vilanova. In 1341 it was acquired by the Order of Santiago, which built a palace there and established the commandery of Sagra; the deed of transfer to the order, signed by the Valencian notary Bernat de Soler, contains one of the earliest documented mentions of the expression Catalan language. In 1535 the village was annexed for parish purposes to Ràfol de Almunia, and after being left deserted it received three successive settlement charters between 1610 and 1613.
