What to see and do in Parcent

Parcent
Village
Parcent is a municipality in the interior of la Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, situated in the Vall de Pop, a basin enclosed by the relief of the Sierra de les Coves, the Carrascal de Parcent and the Sierra del Ferrer; through the valley runs the Gorgos river, the boundary with Murla. Occupied by James I around 1256, in 1259 the king ordered the houses and lands of the alquería to be shared out among new settlers after the revolt of Al-Azraq. In 1609 its valleys served as headquarters for the troops that besieged the nearby castle of Pop, a refuge for moriscos who refused to submit to the expulsion ordered by Philip III. Its wineries produce mistela, fortifying muscat must with alcohol, and red wines from grenache and giró grapes; its church of la Purísima Concepción presides over the urban centre. It has 1,037 inhabitants.
Church of la Purísima Concepción de Parcent
Monument
The church of the Purísima Concepción presides over the town centre of Parcent and is one of the most notable examples of religious architecture in the inland Marina Alta. According to the municipality's article, the church dates from the 16th century and is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection status in the Region of Valencia), although no further details are given about its construction or its interior features.
Mistela and muscat of the Vall de Pop
Food and drink
The wineries of the valley make mistela by fortifying moscatel must with alcohol, besides reds of garnacha and giró. The new wine is celebrated at the fairs that go round the towns in autumn and it accompanies the baking of the patron saint festivities.
