What to see and do in Beniarbeig

Beniarbeig
Village
Beniarbeig is a municipality in la Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, Valencian Community, with 2,499 inhabitants, between the valley of la Rectoría and the Marquisate of Denia, at the foot of the Sierra de Segaría and crossed by the Girona river, three kilometres from the beach. A former Muslim alquería of the Count of Sinarques, in 1535 its parish broke away from that of Denia and in 1643 it passed under the jurisdiction of the Marquis of Denia; an economic crisis in the 18th century, worsened by the expulsion of the moriscos in 1609, marked its demographic history. On 12 October 2007 the flooding of the Girona river, with rainfall of more than 400 millimetres, swept away the village bridge, dating from the early 20th century, and flooded houses and orchards in the vega, forcing the reconstruction of the access route and a review of the urban occupation of the riverbed.
The 2007 flood of the riu Girona
Historical milestone
The overflowing of the riu Girona on 12 October 2007 carried away the town's bridge and flooded houses and market gardens of the plain. The flood forced the access to be rebuilt and the urban occupation of the channel to be reviewed throughout the valley.
