What to see and do in Tollos

Tollos
Village
With 32 inhabitants, Tollos is the least populated municipality in the province of Alicante, in the comarca of the Condado de Cocentaina, in the valley of the Seta river, between the Sierra de la Almudaina and the Sierra de Alfaro. Its name, of Mozarabic origin, refers to depressions in the terrain; as early as 1245 a hisn Tulu, the castle of Tollos, is documented within the domains of the chieftain Al-Azraq. On that Arab fortification the village's parish church was later built, and it still has narrow streets and stone façades. After the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 the territory was left depopulated and its repopulation was very slow: in 1713 it had barely nine households, about 41 inhabitants. In the rock shelters of les Coves Roges, examples of macroschematic rock art have been found.
