What to see and do in Albatera

Albatera
Village
Albatera is a Spanish-speaking municipality in the Vega Baja comarca, in southern Alicante province, with 13,566 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated between the Sierra de Crevillente and the Sierra de Callosa, north of the Segura valley. Conquered in the thirteenth century by the future Alfonso X the Wise and then included in the municipal area of Orihuela, it became independent in 1627 and was raised to a County the following year under the Rocafull family. In the twentieth century a camp was set up here, first a Republican labour camp and later a Francoist concentration camp, built in 1937; in 1993 the municipality of San Isidro was split off from its territory. The hermitage of the Virgin of the Rosary, rebuilt in 1784 on the sierra of the same name, is the destination of the pilgrimage in honour of the municipality's patroness.
