Castle of Santa Bárbara de Cox Monument · Cox, El Baix Segura, Alicante Image of Cox, not of the place itself. Santa Bárbara castle in Cox (Alicante), of Muslim origin, is one of the oldest surviving fortifications in the Comunitat Valenciana and in Spain: materials found at the site show continuous occupation from the Chalcolithic and the Bronze Age to the present, with remains from Iberian, Roman and medieval times. Around 1466 the lord of the manor, Juan Ruíz Dávalos, commissioned a thorough restoration that added the chapel dedicated to Santa Bárbara that gives the castle its name. Set at 80 metres above sea level, with views over the Vega Baja del Segura, it retains a polygonal walled enclosure and a masonry palace, restored in the last decades of the 20th century to recover their original appearance, and it is considered Cox's main monument.
