What to see and do in Benferri

Benferri
Village
Benferri is a municipality in the Vega Baja del Segura, in the huerta of Orihuela, with 2,099 inhabitants. Of Muslim origin, it was part of a large estate acquired in the mid-13th century by the Rocamora family, ancestors of the marquises of Rafal, under whose rule it remained until the Constitution of 1812 abolished the lordships; from 1920 it returned to the nobility as a barony. Nearby, in the field of la Matanza, the Visigoth Teodomiro halted the Muslim advance in 713 and achieved a capitulation that kept the territory's autonomy until the 9th century. Its church, from the late Renaissance, was built in 1622 on top of a hermitage dedicated to Santiago el Mayor, with three naves and a dome on pendentives; on the outskirts, the hermitage of San Isidro is a pilgrimage site during the festivities.
