What to see and do in Lozoya

Lozoya
Village
Lozoya is a municipality of the Community of Madrid situated in the upper valley of the river Lozoya, in the Sierra Norte, with around 598 inhabitants at 1,116 metres, beside the Pinilla reservoir. Its name is said to come from loza or oza, 'pasture' in the Basque of Guipúzcoa, the language of the valley's first resettlers after the Reconquista; the founding of Lozoya is not documented until the 11th century, when it became the capital of the Sexmo de Valdelozoya, dependent on the Concejo de Segovia. It preserves the church of El Salvador, from the 16th century, a Baroque town hall and the Fuente de los Cuatro Caños; in El Chaparral grows the region's only juniper grove.

Nature
On the north-eastern slope of Monte Chaparral grows the only juniper wood in the Region of Madrid, a mixed stand of Spanish junipers and holm oaks looking out over the Pinilla reservoir, at the head of the upper valley of the River Lozoya.
