Driebes
Village
Driebes is a municipality of La Alcarria, in Guadalajara, with 331 inhabitants. The origin of its name is uncertain: the most widely accepted explanation links it to settlers from La Puebla de Trives, in Orense, although an Indo-European origin linked to the number three has also been proposed. In 1945, during work on the Estremera canal, the so-called treasure of Driebes was found on the hill of the Virgen de la Muela: 13.8 kg of goldwork from the 3rd century BC, now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional. In 2016 a ground-penetrating radar survey identified, next to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Muela, the remains of the Roman city of Caraca; some studies also place nearby the battle of the Tagus between Hannibal and the Carpetani, prior to the Second Punic War.
