What to see and do in Villalbilla

Villalbilla
Village
Villalbilla is a municipality of the Community of Madrid, in the comarca of the Alcarria de Alcalá, which divides its nearly 18,700 inhabitants between the settlement of Villalbilla, next to Alcalá de Henares, and the hamlet of Los Hueros, both surrounded by housing developments that arose in the late 20th century. The first settlement would date back to the 12th century, when Alcalá received the Fuero Viejo, but it was Princess Juana who in 1554 granted it the title of town, separating it from Alcalá's jurisdiction. Its church of the Assumption, from the 16th century, displays a Mudéjar tower and a doorway carved by the stonemason Domingo de Cereced. The Anchuelo and Retuenga streams, which cross the district, are represented by two wavy blue stripes on the municipality's flag and coat of arms.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Villalbilla
Monument
A church of limestone ashlar looking out over the slope of the village, with a porticoed atrium on the south side dated 1540 and a Mannerist west doorway carved in the late 16th century by the stonemason Domingo de Cereced, of a family active in Alcalá.
Washhouse of the Fuente de Arriba
Curiosity
A 17th-century complex that brought together in one spot a spring, a drinking trough for livestock and a public washing place, now restored; it sums up how a village of the Henares countryside organised the use of its main spring.
