What to see and do in Valverde de Alcalá

Valverde de Alcalá
Village
Valverde de Alcalá is a small municipality of the Community of Madrid, with about 560 inhabitants, documented since 1129, when Alfonso VII and his wife Berenguela granted the archbishopric of Toledo the town of Alcalá and its hamlets, among them Valverde, integrated into the Alfoz Complutense until 1564, the year it attained the status of exempt town. According to the Relaciones Topográficas of Philip II, at the end of the 16th century it was an agricultural settlement of fifty-six houses and sixty residents that produced bread, wine, oil and hemp, with a small dehesa for sheep, and houses of earth, plaster and wood with tile roofs. It preserves the church of Santo Tomás, the ruins of a convent and a bullring, in a district devoted to cereals, wine and oil.

Monument
A parish church documented since 1576 which replaced an earlier building and preserves images and remains of a late Gothic altarpiece from the last third of the 16th century; its font came from the abandoned Dominican estate of Los Ángeles.

Curiosity
A former Dominican convent whose income was assigned in 1529 to the college of Santo Tomás of the University of Alcalá; it preserves an oil mill, a granary, a dovecote, cells and a church with a baroque altarpiece, half religious house and half farming estate.
