What to see and do in Torres de la Alameda

Torres de la Alameda
Village
Torres de la Alameda is a town in Madrid's Henares corridor, one of the cross-cutting municipalities of the industrialised Henares Valley, with about 7,800 inhabitants, 41 kilometres from Madrid and 9 from Alcalá de Henares. Its district, of plateau and dry-farmed vegas devoted to cereals and olives, is included in the páramo of Campo Real, within the Madrid alcarria. The origin of its name is disputed: it may derive from Metturi, a Carpetani settlement Romanised as Turicum according to a stele preserved in the village. Its residents are known as torresanos, or jokingly as mangurrinos. Its Renaissance church of the Assumption, with three naves and a south portico, keeps a copy of the Shroud of Turin that was touched to the original in 1620; its Rosary festivities fill October.
Copy of the Holy Shroud of Torres
Curiosity
The parish church keeps a replica of the Holy Shroud whose text in Spanish certifies that it touched the original in Turin on 3 May 1620; it is put on display for veneration only three days a year and survived the Civil War in hiding.
Church of la Asunción de Torres de la Alameda
Monument
A 16th-century Renaissance church with three naves and a porticoed atrium on the south side, to which a baroque chapel was added dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario, patron saint of a town that obtained that title in 1555 under royal jurisdiction.
The town charter of Torres de la Alameda
Historical milestone
Princess Juana signed in Valladolid in 1555 the privilege that turned the village into a town of royal jurisdiction, taking it out of the orbit of the archbishopric of Toledo and of the twenty-five towns of the land of Alcalá.
Tortilla Day
Food and drink
A day on which the residents go out into the country with family and friends to eat potato omelette, a custom of communal picnicking that survives in several villages of the comarca and marks the local festive calendar.
