What to see and do in Móstoles

Móstoles
Village
Móstoles is the second most populous municipality in the Community of Madrid, with around 214,000 inhabitants, located 18 kilometers southwest of the capital in the valley of the Guadarrama River. In barely forty years it went from being a rural settlement of around 4,000 inhabitants, in the mid-1960s, to a satellite city of more than 200,000 at the start of the 21st century; despite its character as a commuter town, it today hosts the campus and main headquarters of Rey Juan Carlos University. The town went down in history for the proclamation of 2 May 1808, signed by its mayors Andrés Torrejón and Simón Hernández, calling people to arms against the French, and it preserves the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Santos.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Móstoles
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the oldest building in Móstoles and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1982, stands where a mosque once stood, of which the old minaret survives: on its base the present brick Mudéjar bell tower, some 26 metres tall, was raised in the thirteenth century, its upper section, housing the clock, already dating from the seventeenth or eighteenth century. Of the Christian church built by Muslim masons in the service of the church, the semicircular apse survives, with three bands of arcading, which for centuries housed the main chapel. Enlarged between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, its baptistery was built between 1850 and 1852, although the baptismal font dates from the time of the Catholic Monarchs. It presides over the old town, where the 1808 proclamation was signed.
Andrés Torrejón House Museum
Monument
Adobe dwelling reinforced with brick courses, probably built in the late 18th century, which belonged to the mayor who on 2 May 1808 signed, together with Simón Hernández, the so-called proclamation of the mayors of Móstoles.
Museum of la Ciudad de Móstoles
Monument
It occupies the former Casa de Correos, a neo-Mudéjar building on calle Andrés Torrejón that retains its original façade and structure, and holds a 1:20 scale model reconstructing what the town looked like in 1808. The museum, run by the Town Council and located in the Centro district, very close to the Casa Museo Andrés Torrejón, opened on 18 November 2008 with an investment of 2.1 million euros. It has an exhibition hall, an auditorium and several multipurpose rooms, and offers a permanent exhibition on the history of Móstoles from the nineteenth century to the present, a photographic collection from the early twentieth century and an ethnographic room focused on the municipality's agricultural past. The 1808 model was made by the Asociación Histórico Cultural 2 de Mayo.
Festivities of el 2 de Mayo de Móstoles
Activity
Declared of National Tourist Interest, they commemorate the proclamation of 1808 with a theatrical re-enactment of the uprising, a lantern parade to the monument to Andrés Torrejón, a rifle salute for the fallen and a float competition.
The proclamation of the mayors of Móstoles
Historical milestone
The mayors of Móstoles, Andrés Torrejón and Simón Hernández, signed on 2 May 1808 the proclamation, drafted by Juan Pérez Villamil and Esteban Fernández de León, calling on the authorities of the towns to help Madrid against the French. That day the people of Madrid had risen up against Murat's troops following the Aranjuez mutiny and the abdication of Charles IV in favour of his son Ferdinand VII; those who took part were mainly from the working classes, with the exception of the soldiers of the Monteleón artillery depot, while the wealthier classes stayed on the sidelines. The revolt was put down by around two in the afternoon, and the day ended with the shooting of hundreds of Madrid residents in the early hours of 3 May, events that the Bando de Móstoles sought to counter.
