What to see and do in Creixell

Creixell
Village
Creixell is a coastal municipality in the comarca of the Tarragonès, in the province of Tarragona, located on the Costa Dorada between Roda de Bará and Torredembarra, with a mountainous area exceeding 300 metres at its northern boundary with the Baix Penedès. It has 4261 inhabitants and has become a tourist locality, with eleven housing developments within its boundaries. The oldest remains found are those of a Roman villa from the 2nd and 3rd centuries in the area of la Clota. The place appears documented in the mid-11th century and received its charter of settlement in 1190, granted by the bishop of Barcelona. Its name comes from the village of the same name in the Alt Empordà, whose lords helped the king of Aragon against the Saracens. In the town, the castle of Creixell and several watchtowers are preserved.
Castle of Creixell
Monument
Polygonal castle (nine sides) in the highest part of the village; its oldest parts date from the late 11th century, though most of what is visible is later than the 16th. Next to it, three 14th-century defense towers -Cal Jeroni, Cal Xacó, and Ca la Miquelina- were part of the wall that surrounded the medieval settlement. Today the castle is privately owned and survives in good condition. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Tower of Ca la Miquelina
Monument
Irregular square-plan tower about ten meters high, probably from the 14th century, incorporated into the old wall. It preserves its crown of truncated-pyramid battlements and a zoomorphic gargoyle added once it lost its defensive function; attached to the west is the Casa Álvarez or Ca la Miquelina, a 15th-16th-century Flamboyant Gothic manor house that the town council bought after more than three decades of negotiations.
Tower of Cal Jeroni
Monument
The tallest of the surviving towers of the wall, at about twelve meters, square in plan, of masonry with the corners reinforced with ashlars and topped by three truncated-pyramid battlements per side. It stands in the northern part of the Plaça Major, surrounded by buildings that leave only its upper part visible.
Tower of Cal Xacó
Monument
The Torre de Cal Xacó is a Gothic work in Creixell, from the 14th century, with a square plan and about 10 metres in height, which formed part of the medieval defensive wall, at the western end of the town. It does not preserve its original crowning, replaced by a modern roof, though its windows are original; today it has houses attached to it. Together with the castle and the towers of Ca la Miquelina and Cal Jeroni, it was declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 2009, within the group of military architecture of Creixell.
