What to see and do in Torredembarra

Torredembarra
Village
Torredembarra, called simply Torre by its inhabitants, is a coastal town in the comarca of Tarragonès, with 18,237 inhabitants, that forms part of the Costa Daurada and preserves its Renaissance castle. It stretches along the coast between Creixell and Altafulla, with a main urban centre and distinct areas such as the residential zone of Els Munts, the fishing quarter of Baix a Mar and the protected area of Els Muntanyans, a wetland next to the beach of notable ecological value. The Mediterranean climate, mild in winter and hot in summer, favours the carob tree, pine and succulent plants such as the agave or aloe vera, while among the fauna the little owl, the hoopoe in summer and the northern lapwing in winter stand out.
Castle of Torredembarra
Monument
The castle-palace of Torredembarra, regarded as one of Catalonia's most notable Renaissance buildings, replaces an earlier one documented in 1057. The present building, designed as a fortified residence that would dominate the town from its highest point, began to be built from 1565 on the initiative of Lluís d'Icart, lord of the place. It has a square plan with four corner towers and a central porticoed courtyard, and its portal displays two pairs of Tuscan columns beneath a semicircular pediment. It gradually lost importance from the 18th century onward and reached the 20th century badly deteriorated, until it was restored in 1998 to become the seat of the Town Council.
Battle of Torredembarra
Historical milestone
In the summer of 1713, at the start of the final Catalan resistance of the War of the Succession, the Bourbon troops defeated here the forces supporting Archduke Charles after the withdrawal of the allied army from the Camp de Tarragona.
