What to see and do in Tivenys

Tivenys
Village
Tivenys is a municipality of 948 inhabitants in the comarca of Baix Ebre, in Tarragona, situated on the left bank of the Ebro River, between the Sierra de Cardó and the river itself. Ramon Berenguer IV granted it to the Jews of Tortosa in 1149, and in the 12th century it passed to the Templars, who built here a conventual house, cemetery, church and hospital, as well as two watchtowers over the Ebro valley. It lives from olive growing, with significant oil production, and irrigated fruit trees. Its 18th-century parish church is dedicated to Saint Benedict, Saint Michael and Saint Anthony Abbot, and beside the Ebro the Cherta weir survives, Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), along with a 6th-century BC Iberian settlement with a defensive tower unique in the comarca.
