What to see and do in Alfara de Carles

Alfara de Carles
Village
Alfara de Carles is a municipality of 355 inhabitants on the foothills of the Ports, in the comarca of Baix Ebre, whose present-day centre was formed in 1479 when the inhabitants of the old castle of Carles — already mentioned in 1148, when Ramon Berenguer IV handed it over to Pere I de Sentmenat — moved to Alfara because of an epidemic. Remains of the Romanesque castle of Carles survive as evidence of that settlement. In the municipality stands the Abrigo de la Cova Pintada, discovered in 1914 by the prehistorian Henri Breuil, with a red triskelion of a type unique in Catalonia, included in the Mediterranean Basin rock art declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The economy relies on olive and almond farming and livestock raising.
Castle of Carles
Monument
Castle of Andalusi origin predating the Christian conquest, with opus spicatum walls in its southern sector; the current upper and lower fortification dates from around the 13th century and is documented as a frontier castle in 1173, when the district formed a barony of the Sentmenat family.
Els Ports (Baix Ebre Slope)
Nature
The eastern slope of the Ports massif within the municipalities of Alfara de Carles and Paüls (Baix Ebre, Tarragona), the easternmost end of the Iberian System, covering more than 800 km² divided between Catalonia, Aragon and the Valencian Community. Its highest peak, Mont Caro, at 1,441 metres, is also the highest point in the province of Tarragona; it is followed by Tossal d'En Canader, at 1,393 metres. Vegetation varies with altitude: scrubland and Aleppo pine woods up to 600 metres, black pine and Scots pine woods between 500 and 1,400 metres, and beech woods and mixed forests at the highest elevations. Since 2001, under Decree 160/2001, a large part of this area, 35,050 hectares in total, forms the Ports Natural Park.
