What to see and do in el Perelló

El Perelló
Village
El Perelló is a municipality in Baix Ebre, in Tarragona, situated between sea and mountain, between the Serra del Boix to the west and the Gulf of Sant Jordi on the Mediterranean coast, with 3,005 inhabitants and the village set at 142 metres above sea level. It retains several watchtowers and the old Molí del Vent. In the municipality is the Abrigo de Cabra Feixet, with Levantine rock art paintings some 10,000 years old, made known in 1922 by Joan Margalef to the Institut d'Estudis Catalans; figures of archers, goats and deer painted in red survive. Together with other similar shelters in the area, it forms part of the Mediterranean Basin Rock Art of the Iberian Peninsula, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
Mill of el Vent
Monument
El Molí del Vent is a circular tower, the base of an old windmill converted to military use, in the municipality of El Perelló. With a lintelled entrance — a sign that it has been altered —, it rises almost flush with the ground and has several windows opened in later periods. Its walls are of irregular stone, with no remains of battlements or corbels; because of its present appearance, it has even been mistaken for a power pole.
El Perelló Main Festival
Activity
El Perelló celebrates its patron saint feast on 17 January in honour of Sant Antoni Abat, patron of the municipality, the largest honey producer in Catalonia.
Festivities of invierno del Perelló
Activity
El Perelló's winter festival is held in Catalonia's largest honey producer, seat of the Cooperativa Apícola Tarragonina, in whose district the Abric de Cabra Feixet is preserved, with Epipalaeolithic paintings some ten thousand years old inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage list in 1998.
Abric de Cabra Feixet
Nature
Shelter with figurative paintings by Epipalaeolithic hunter-gatherers, some ten thousand years old. It forms part of the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Arc of the Iberian Peninsula, inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage list in 1998.
Honey of Perelló
Food and drink
El Perelló is the largest honey producer in Catalonia and hosts the Cooperativa Apícola Tarragonina. The hives make use of the flowering of the Mediterranean scrub, and the honey coexists with the olive and the almond as the agricultural basis of the district.
