What to see and do in Figuerola del Camp

Figuerola del Camp
Village
Figuerola del Camp is a municipality in Alt Camp, in Tarragona, on the slope of the Sierra de Miramar, at an altitude of 474 metres and at the foot of the Tossal Gros, with views over Alt Camp, Tarragonès and Baix Camp. The name is already documented in the year 980, in a donation by Count Borrell II of the castle of Cabra to a nobleman named Ervigi, and in 1198 it received a charter of settlement; from the 13th century until 1835 it formed part of the domains of the monastery of Poblet. The castle of Figuerola is documented from 1271, and the Torre de la Mixarda, in its territory, is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The municipality, whose territory includes much of the forests of Miramar, lives from farming and celebrates its festa major on 25 July, Saint James's day. It has 342 inhabitants.
Castle of Figuerola
Monument
The castell of Figuerola, which gives its name to Figuerola del Camp (Alt Camp, Tarragona), stood on the southern slope of the Serra de Miramar; the place name already appears in 980 in a document of Count Borrell II of Barcelona, and the castle is documented since the 12th century, when it formed a territorial unit together with the castles of Miramar and Prenafeta. It was in the hands of the Puigverd family until 1271, the year in which Berenguer de Puigverd donated it, together with Prenafeta and Miramar, to the monastery of Poblet, a donation confirmed in 1297 and ratified by arbitration in 1338. No old wall is preserved, though the name of the carrer del Castell and the era del Castell (threshing floor) still survive.
Tower of la Mixarda
Monument
The Torre de la Mixarda, also called Torre dels Moros, is a circular watch and defence tower, about 6.5 m in diameter and 10 m high, in the municipality of Figuerola del Camp. Its rubble masonry walls, 0.80 m thick, retain arrow slits, three square windows in the upper part and the remains of three machicolations. In the basement, covered with a stone vault, there is an old cistern and an inscription from 1615 found during an excavation in 2007. Despite the tradition linking it to the watchtowers raised after the reconquest of Tarragona in 812, its construction rather suggests a more modern building, with no documentary basis for a medieval origin. The town council bought it in 2006 and, restored, it has been open to visitors since 2009.
Figuerola del Camp Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Figuerola del Camp is celebrated on the weekend closest to 25 July, the feast day of Santiago Apóstol; the town also has a festivity for the Virgen de la Esperanza in December and another dedicated to San Antimo in May.
Arbequina oil of the Sierra de Miramar
Food and drink
The olive groves of the slopes of the sierra give an arbequina oil of low acidity and fruity flavour, milled in cooperative oil mills at the foot of the range. The gathering is done between November and January, still largely by hand.
