What to see and do in el Pont d'Armentera

El Pont d'Armentera
Village
El Pont d'Armentera is a municipality in the comarca of Alt Camp, in the province of Tarragona, at an altitude of 349 metres and dominated by the castle of Selmella, which headed its own feudal district, a 10th-century Romanesque work declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Its name is recorded on the municipal coat of arms, which depicts a three-arched bridge flanked by two abbot's crosiers, recalling the village's belonging to the monastery of Santes Creus since the 15th century. Made up of a single settlement, it reached its peak population in 1842, with 1,469 inhabitants, since then in continuous decline to the present 500.
Castle of Selmella
Monument
A border castle of the Hispanic March situated atop the Selmella hill, north of the municipality of Pont d'Armentera (Alt Camp), dated to the late 10th or early 11th century. It stands a few metres from the old church of Sant Llorenç de Selmella, in the abandoned village of the same name, of which today only piled stones remain. The church, by contrast, still has its walls, apse, bell tower and part of the nave's vault standing, with an access door with a semicircular arch and large voussoirs.
El Pont d'Armentera Main Festival
Activity
El Pont d'Armentera celebrates its summer Festa Major on 22 July in honor of Santa Maria Magdalena; on 3 January it celebrates the winter Festa Major, dedicated to the Sant Crist, with the traditional procession of blessed bread (processó del pa beneït).
