What to see and do in Sarral

Sarral
Village
Sarral, formerly Sarreal, is a town of the Conca de Barberà, in Tarragona, with 1,644 inhabitants (INE 2025), which includes the settlements of Montbrió de la Marca, incorporated in 1975, and Vallverd, in 1857. Its name comes from «Sa Real» ('the Royal'), since it belonged directly to the king and remained exempt from the lordship of the nobility, the Church or the guilds ever since Alfonso II granted it a charter of settlement in 1180. It was walled, although its walls were destroyed in a war with John II of Castile, and it had a medieval castle of which no trace remains, located where the town hall stands today. Traditionally linked to the making of clay vessels, in 1810 Pau Alió Anguera was born here, a lieutenant in the army of Ramón Cabrera who, in the First Carlist War, conquered Morella.
Church of Sarral
Monument
Church of Santa Maria, built between 1748 and 1755 in Baroque style on the site of a 12th-13th-century Romanesque church, which had itself been burned in 1464 during the war against Juan II and rebuilt in Gothic style using the recovered materials; it suffered further fires during the Civil War (1936 and 1939) and was restored afterward. From the original Romanesque church the tympanum survives, with carved foliage and niches containing sculptures of the Virgin, San Pedro and San Juan.
Sarral Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Sarral is celebrated in a town whose quarries yield a translucent, veined alabaster worked since the early modern period, from which altarpieces and images were carved; artisan workshops that maintain the craft are still operating.
Alabaster quarries and workshops of Sarral
Historical milestone
The quarries of Sarral have extracted alabaster since at least Roman times; the craft reached its peak in the early 20th century, when more than thirty workshops turned the stone into altarpieces, images and liturgical objects, an activity now commemorated by the village's Museo del Alabastro.
