What to see and do in Pira

Pira
Village
Pira is a small rural municipality of the Conca de Barberà, in the province of Tarragona, situated on the banks of the Anguera river, with 512 inhabitants and devoted mainly to vineyards. Documented since 1067, when Berenguer Ramon II ceded its castle -of which no trace remains- to Ermengol IV of Urgell, it later passed through the hands of the monastery of Poblet and was a lordship of the Templars between 1248 and 1312, and afterwards of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem until the end of the lordships. Its cooperative winery, the work of the architect Cèsar Martinell, opened in 1919, is one of the so-called cathedrals of wine, and the parish church of Sant Salvador was built between 1862 and 1865.
