What to see and do in Vilaverd

Vilaverd
Village
Vilaverd is a municipality of the Conca de Barberà, in the province of Tarragona, on the banks of the Francolí river and at the entrance to the Riba gorge, with 493 inhabitants. In the Barranc del Mal Torrent a rock shelter is preserved with Neolithic cave paintings around 6,500 years old, included in the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. The town arose from the resettlement begun in the 12th century by Ramon Berenguer IV. It harnessed the power of the Francolí for flour mills and had natural ice wells; today it lives off industry and the cultivation of vineyards, olive groves and cereals. In the old quarter stands the church of Saint Martin, Romanesque with Gothic elements, and near the village, the sanctuary of the Virgin of Montgoi.
