What to see and do in es Bòrdes

Es Bòrdes
Village
Es Bòrdes is a municipality in the north-west of the Vall d'Aran, in the province of Lérida, located at the confluence of the rivers Garona and Joeu, next to the French border, and made up of four villages: Es Bòrdes, Benòs, Begòs and Arró. Until the 18th century it was no more than a cluster of borde farmsteads of Benòs and Begòs, known as Les Bordes de Castell-lleó after the medieval castle of Lleó, built between 1283 and 1719; after its destruction, some houses were built with the salvaged materials and, in 1806, the parish church. The municipality, very mountainous, preserves fir and beech woods that sustain livestock farming and the timber industry. In the village's traditional Aranese cuisine, Garona trout and the local crepes known as crespèths have a place of their own.
Lleó Castle
Monument
Castle-palace, today in ruins, at the confluence of the Garona and Joèu rivers; it originated in a tower built in 1283 by the seneschal of Toulouse, Eustache de Beaumarchais, after the French invasion of the valley. In the 14th century it became the seat of the royal governors and administrators of the Aran; its name comes from one of its cannons, decorated with a lion's head. It was destroyed in 1719 by the troops of the duke of Berwick during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).

Landscape of the Ribèra d'Es Bòrdes
Nature
Es Bòrdes, at 852 m in the Mijaran (middle Aran), sits at the confluence of the Garona, which borders it to the north, and the Joeu, which borders it to the south; the village, of relatively recent origin, grew out of the huts that shepherds built to spend the night when taking livestock to graze on the other side of the river. The Garona is Catalonia's only river on the Atlantic slope.
Fair of Otoño d'Es Bòrdes
Activity
The autumn fair of Es Bòrdes.
Crespèths
Food and drink
Thin crêpes of flour, egg and milk that are eaten dusted with sugar and are associated with the winter festivities. Depending on the town of the valley they take the name of crespèths, brescajús or pastères, with small variations in the batter and the thickness.
River trout of the Garonne
Food and drink
The brown trout of the Garona and its tributaries is the fish proper to Aranese cooking: it is prepared over embers, fried with bacon or marinated. River fishing is regulated by preserves and it marks the gastronomic calendar of spring and summer.
