Lleó Castle Monument · es Bòrdes, Val d'Aran, Lleida Image of es Bòrdes, not of the place itself. Castle-palace, today in ruins, at the confluence of the Garona and Joèu rivers; it originated in a tower built in 1283 by the seneschal of Toulouse, Eustache de Beaumarchais, after the French invasion of the valley. In the 14th century it became the seat of the royal governors and administrators of the Aran; its name comes from one of its cannons, decorated with a lion's head. It was destroyed in 1719 by the troops of the duke of Berwick during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
