What to see and do in Canejan

Canejan
Village
Canejan is a mountain town and municipality located in the northern part of the Aran Valley, in the province of Lleida, bordering France and at 906 metres above sea level, on the right bank of the río Torán, near its confluence with the Garona. It has 95 inhabitants spread across ten settlements, among them Pradet, Navías and San Juan de Torán. Its narrow, steep streets preserve old buildings and climb up to the church of San Saturnino, of Romanesque origin and remodelled in 1818. Its economy is based on cattle farming and hydroelectric power, with two plants in the municipality. Its traditional pig slaughter combines the Gascon tradition of pâtés with Catalan preparations of longanissa sausages and blood sausages cured in the cold of the mountain, centred on the Casa Sirat.
Sirat House
Monument
A medieval house in the municipality of Canejan, in the Aran Valley, included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. The building, known as Çò des de Sirat, preserves a round-arched portal with marble pieces from Sant Beat and a courtyard with a second arch dated 1781; beside the house stands a nine-metre square tower, probably earlier than the rest of the building, with wooden windows and a small chapel inside. The surname Sirat has been documented in the valley since the early 14th century. Abandoned for a long time, a good part of the building now lies in ruins.
Canejan Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Canejan is held on the weekend of 29 August in honour of Sant Joan Baptista, with mass in the church of Sant Serni, contests, children's games and a communal dinner.
Town Hall of Canejan
Monument
The historic town hall of Canejan.
Cured meats of the Aranese pig slaughter
Food and drink
The pig slaughter stocked the winter larder with longanizas, chorizos, pâtés and blood sausages cured in the cold of the mountains. The Aranese sausages combine the Gascon tradition of pâtés with the Catalan preparations of slow curing.
