Vilamòs
Village
Vilamòs is a small mountain municipality of the Val d'Aran, in Lleida, located on the right bank of the river Garona, on a flat area of the southern slopes of the Uishèra mountain, at 1,255 metres above sea level. It was the capital of the old Aranese terçó of Lairissa; its coat of arms recalls the waters of the Garona and its lakes, along with the snow, woods and meadows of the valley. The village is presided over by the parish church of Santa María, of Romanesque origin from the 12th century; the chapel of San Miguel, from the 11th century, is considered the oldest in the valley. It lives from livestock farming and forestry, and here brossat is made, a fresh cheese from cow's-milk whey, the base of homemade sweets in Aranese pastry-making. It celebrates its main festival of Sant Roc on 15 and 16 August. It has 174 inhabitants.
