Castle of Ciutadilla Monument · Ciutadilla, Urgell, Lleida The castle of Ciutadilla, which gives the municipality its name, was an 11th-century medieval fortress with Romanesque and Gothic additions, transformed in the 16th century into a Renaissance palace and inhabited until 1908. The first written reference dates from 30 September 1029, when an arbitration ruling cites its walls and Guerau de Guimerà as jurisdictional lord. In the 16th century, Gispert de Guimerà built the keep, quadrangular, of seven storeys, with machicolations and Renaissance windows on the upper floors. The interior courtyard, of trapezoidal plan, preserved a colonnaded gallery until the early 20th century. Left exposed to the elements, part of the building began to be demolished in 1908; at the end of the 20th century minimal restoration works were carried out.
