What to see and do in Pinell de Solsonès

Pinell de Solsonès
Village
Pinell de Solsonès is a municipality in the comarca of the Solsonès, in the province of Lleida, located at its south-western end, with its capital at Sant Climenç. It is made up of five settlements and has 198 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its territory, a plateau sloping from north-east to south-west, runs from 435 metres of altitude, beside the riera de Madrona, to 917 metres at the Serrat de Marrossella, and its waters belong to the Segre basin, through the riera de Madrona and other minor streams that cross the plateau. It preserves the castle of Madrona and the Sallent defence tower, evidence of its fortified past on the border between the Solsonès and the Bages.
Castle of Madrona
Monument
The castell de Madrona stands at the western end of the settlement of Madrona, a population entity of the municipality of Pinell de Solsonès, in the comarca of Solsonès, situated on a ridge at 540 metres of altitude, at the foot of the Serra de Sant Joan and surrounded by mountains of Corsican pine, Scots pine and holm oak. A castle documented since 1053, with its first known lords, the Gombau family, in 1085; today it is very ruined and its plan is barely distinguishable, beside the remains of the Romanesque church of Sant Pere de Madrona, whose old rectory has been restored as rural tourism accommodation.
Tower of defensa de Sallent
Monument
11th-12th-century circular stone tower, atop a hill above the church of Sant Jaume de Sallent, on the frontier line between Old Catalonia and Saracen lands. Today only the northern half survives, about 11 m high across three levels, with the door threshold on the first floor and an arrow slit on the second. The place belonged to the bishop of Urgell and in the 18th century passed to the community of canons of Solsona as the barony of Sallent. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Pinell de Solsonès Main Festival
Activity
Pinell de Solsonès does not celebrate a single municipal festa major, but rather several by settlement: that of Madrona on 15 August (Verge Assumpta), that of Sant Climenç on 24 June (with the traditional pine-raising, aixecada del pi) and that of la Serra on 3 May.
