What to see and do in Biosca

Biosca
Village
Biosca is a municipality in the Solsonès, in the province of Lleida, with 185 inhabitants (INE 2025), bathed by the Llobregós river and also including the settlement of Lloberola. It belonged to the Segarra comarca until, following a process begun in 2010, it split off on 21 March 2023 to join the Solsonès. Its name, of Iberian origin and documented since the 11th century, appears on the coat of arms with a six-pointed star (bios) and a dog (ca). The municipality is documented from 1031. The castle of Lloberola, pre-Romanesque and from the 10th century, is first recorded in 1041, and in 1172 it was owned by Pere Sanç de Llobera, passing in the 14th century to the Cardona family; today it is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The castle of Biosca, Romanesque, was in 1067 the property of Sança d'Aragó, mother of the count of Urgell, and its fortifications were extended by the liberals in 1839 during the First Carlist War.

A 10th-century castle documented since 1041, owned in 1172 by Pere Sanç de Llobera and passed in the 14th century to the Cardona family; today it is a ruin with stretches of wall and towers, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Around it and the church of Sant Miquel clusters the village of Lloberola, today with about 50 inhabitants, which formed part of the lordship of the marquises of Gironella and was an independent municipality until the mid-19th century. Its old cemetery preserves two 14th-century sarcophagi carved with geometric and heraldic decoration.
