What to see and do in Massoteres

Massoteres
Village
Massoteres is a municipality in the comarca of la Segarra, in the province of Lleida, situated in the plain of Guisona. It has 227 inhabitants and supplements agriculture with livestock farming. Its old town, with an almost circular layout of short alleys, preserves houses such as Can Soler, of Renaissance type, with a lintelled doorway and heraldic coats of arms, and Cal Pintor, with noble emblems, as well as the neoclassical parish church of San Salvador. The municipality also includes the hamlets of Palou de Torà and Talteüll, formerly Tartarell, whose castle gave its name to the district Massoteres once formed part of.
Tower of el Castell de Talteüll
Monument
Ruins popularly known as the "Torre dels Moros", atop Talteüll; they preserve the lower part of a wide, slightly battered cylindrical tower, up to about 5 m high, with well-aligned rectangular ashlars. Documented since 1065 under the counts of Urgell, it passed in the 13th-14th centuries to the Pinós family, in 1377 to Arnau d'Erill, and in the 15th century to the Camporrells family, lords of Biosca.
Church of Sant Pere de Talteüll
Monument
Church of the settlement of Talteüll, in the municipality of Massoteres (Segarra), situated next to the old castle of Talteüll, on a hill beside the Llobregós river; it was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in October 2019. Consecrated in 1077 by the papal legate Amat d'Oloron, it had been given in 1075 by the count of Urgell Ermengol IV to the canonry of Solsona. Of an exceptional structure within Lombard architecture, it has two parallel naves covered by a semicircular barrel vault reinforced by a transverse arch, separated by formeret arches, and two semicircular apses. It belonged to the diocese of Urgell until the creation of that of Solsona, in the late 16th century, and at the end of the 19th it lost its parish rank on becoming a suffragan of Sant Salvador de Massoteres.
