What to see and do in Soses

Soses
Village
Soses is a municipality of the comarca of the Segrià, next to Aragonese lands, situated on the banks of the river Segre 13 km from Lleida, with its Gebut castle. Its origin is Islamic: the ruins and remains of walls that dominate the old quarter correspond, according to the historian Pita Mercè, to the ancient Arab fortress. In 1120, Soses and its castle were among the places ceded to Ramon Berenguer III, and in 1145, during the Christian conquest of the Segrià, it fell into the hands of Ermengol VI of Urgell. In 1223, James I confirmed to his half-sister Constança the possession of the castles of Aitona, Seròs and Soses, which she brought to the powerful house of Montcada on marrying the seneschal Guillem Ramon de Montcada, founder of the branch of the lords of Aitona.
Castle of Gebut
Monument
Gebut castle, in the municipal district of Soses (Segrià), is a site declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) of which little remains today, atop a hill some 300 metres high, halfway between Soses and Aitona. What survive are the walls of an Andalusi fortification, trapezoidal in plan, with towers at the corners and on the long sides, built of large unworked sandstone ashlars; around it, remains of dwellings, a possible mosque and a necropolis have been excavated. The site brings together remains from different periods, from the Final Bronze Age to an Iberian settlement of the 6th-3rd centuries BC, and it was one of the Islamic castles of the taifa of Lleida in the 11th century; after the Christian conquest it passed through the hands of the Cervera family, the Montcada family and, in 1304, the Temple.
