Massalcoreig
Village
Massalcoreig is a municipality of the Segrià, in Lleida, at 94 metres above sea level and on the border with Aragon, at the confluence of the Segre and the Cinca; it is the only town in Catalonia through which the Cinca flows. It has 592 inhabitants and its municipal area borders Fraga, Torrent de Cinca, Seròs and la Granja d'Escarp; it includes the hamlet of Pla del Escarpe. Its name derives from the Arabic 'manzal Qurayš', the inn of the Banu Quraysh on a Roman road towards Caesaraugusta. Its economy is agricultural, both irrigated and dry-farmed, with peaches, nectarines, apricots, apples and pears. It preserves the neoclassical church of San Bartolomé and the abbey of Santa María de Escarpe. It was the first Catalan town occupied by Franco's troops, in March 1938.
