What to see and do in la Granja d'Escarp

La Granja d'Escarp
Village
La Granja d'Escarp is a municipality in the Segrià comarca, in the province of Lleida, situated on the border with Aragon, at the confluence of the rivers Cinca and Segre, shortly before both join the Ebro at the place known as the aiguabarreig. It has 994 inhabitants. Its economy today is based on irrigated agriculture, with pears, peaches, cherries and nectarines; in the past it also lived from the coal mines of the Mequinensa basin, which from 1876 supplied a cement factory whose facilities are still partly preserved. It is home to the church of Saint James, from the 18th century with a neoclassical façade, and the Pi Batiste, a centuries-old pine tree.
Segre-Cinca Confluence
Nature
The place where the rivers Segre and Cinca meet, in the municipal district of la Granja d'Escarp, within the great river landscape known as l'Aiguabarreig, which a little further down, at Mequinensa, is completed by the joining of the Segre with the Ebro itself. Bounded by the course of the Cinca at the border with the Baix Cinca and by that of the Segre between the bridge of Seròs, Massalcoreig, la Granja d'Escarp and Almatret, this confluence forms the largest sheet of river water on the Iberian Peninsula, with abundant islands, riverside forests and reed beds. It is an ideal habitat for large numbers of birds, both resident and migratory, which makes it one of the richest river areas on the Lleida plain.
