What to see and do in Torrente de Cinca

Torrente de Cinca
Village
Torrente de Cinca is a municipality of 1,037 inhabitants in the Bajo Cinca region, situated on a height on the right bank of the Cinca river, south of Fraga, with a dry climate and scant rainfall, barely 300 mm a year. Ceded by Alfonso II to the Order of the Hospital in 1174, it received a settlement charter two years later from the Master of Amposta and remained under Hospitaller rule at least until 1391, when it is documented as Torrent de Cinqua, and still in 1610. It preserves an aqueduct-like bridge from the Arab period, remains of Roman settlements, the parish church of Santa Magdalena, in three-naved Aragonese Baroque style, and the Renaissance hermitage of San Salvador, attached to a former convent of Trinitarian friars. It celebrates its patronal festival on 6 August, in honour of San Salvador.
Castle of Torrente de Cinca
Monument
Of the castle that gives its name to Torrente de Cinca (Bajo Cinca, Huesca) little historical record remains: according to what Pascual Madoz recorded in his 1845 dictionary, the village then had a hundred houses and a small fortress capable of housing a hundred men, a reference that remains the most concrete surviving testimony about the building.
Church of Torrente de Cinca
Monument
The parish church of Torrente de Cinca is dedicated to Santa Magdalena and follows the Aragonese Baroque style, with a basilical plan of three naves. It stands next to the remains of the town's castle, in the historic centre of this settlement in the Bajo Cinca comarca.
Festivities of Torrente de Cinca
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Torrente de Cinca on 6 August, in honour of San Salvador; on 17 January San Antonio Abad is celebrated and on 15 May a pilgrimage for San Isidro Labrador.
Festivities of invierno de Torrente de Cinca
Activity
Festival of San Antón in Torrente de Cinca, with a monument made of fire and a communal dinner of meat, longaniza and sardines; a winter custom of the village, whose oil mills press mostly arbequina and empeltre olives.
Settlement charter of the Master of Amposta
Historical milestone
Alfonso II ceded Torrente to the Order of the Hospital in 1174 and two years later the Master of Amposta granted a charter of settlement to the new residents. The place remained under Hospitaller rule at least until 1391, when it is documented as Torrent de Cinqua.
Olive mills and olive oil of the Cinca
Food and drink
The dryland olive grove of the hills of the south of the comarca supplies the local cooperative mills, which press above all arbequina and empeltre. The oil is marketed in the comarca itself and accompanies the vegetables, the migas and the lamb roasts.
