Els Plans de Sió
Village
Els Plans de Sió is a municipality in the comarca of la Segarra, in the province of Lleida, formed in 1974 by the merger of the former terms of Pallargas (Les Pallargues) and Arañó (L'Aranyó), with its capital at Pallargas. Located in the plain of Guisona, at the western end of the comarca, it preserves the castle and the fortified gateway of l'Aranyó, as well as the castles of Concabella, Montcortès, les Pallargues and Ratera. The territory is also home to the church of Sant Esteve de Pelagalls and the Museu de la Pagesia de Sisteró, dedicated to traditional farming life. It has 506 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Monument

Castle of l'Aranyó
Monument
The castle of l'Aranyó stands in the village of the same name, in the municipality of els Plans de Sió (Segarra), on the bank of the Sió river, at 461 metres of altitude and 6 kilometres from Cervera; the settlement is today almost uninhabited. It was built in the 16th century, and the writer Manuel de Pedrolo was born there; he described the place as a silent, abandoned village, with the castle tower rising above the square mass of grey stone. Near the settlement stand two large, heavily eroded sandstone rocks, known as els pallers de pedra (the stone haystacks) for their shape, which have given rise to a popular legend. The municipality was independent until its integration into els Plans de Sió in 1974.

Monument
Remains of the medieval fortification of l'Aranyó, a village in the municipality of els Plans de Sió (Segarra, Lleida), around the village castle, built in the 16th century on a quadrangular stone structure topped by a tower. The castle is the birthplace of the writer Manuel de Pedrolo, who described its tower as neither very tall nor slender. Near the settlement stand els pallers de pedra, two large, heavily eroded sandstone rocks whose shape has given rise to local legends.
Bread and wheat coques of the Segarra
Food and drink
The comarca is dry-farmed cereal country, and its wheat feeds a baking tradition of loaves of dense crumb and of savoury cocas covered with roasted vegetables or cured meat, which are baked for fairs and festes majors.
