Castle of l'Aranyó Monument · els Plans de Sió, Segarra, Lleida The castle of l'Aranyó stands in the village of the same name, in the municipality of els Plans de Sió (Segarra), on the bank of the Sió river, at 461 metres of altitude and 6 kilometres from Cervera; the settlement is today almost uninhabited. It was built in the 16th century, and the writer Manuel de Pedrolo was born there; he described the place as a silent, abandoned village, with the castle tower rising above the square mass of grey stone. Near the settlement stand two large, heavily eroded sandstone rocks, known as els pallers de pedra (the stone haystacks) for their shape, which have given rise to a popular legend. The municipality was independent until its integration into els Plans de Sió in 1974. Photo: Xevi V (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in els Plans de Sió
