What to see and do in la Guingueta d'Àneu

La Guingueta d'Àneu
Village
La Guingueta d'Àneu is a municipality of the Pallars Sobirà district, in Lleida province, located in the Àneu valley, east of the Noguera Pallaresa, in a mountainous grazing area watered by the Unarre river and set beside the Torrasa reservoir. It was formed in the early 1970s by the merger of Escaló, Jou and Unarre, and today groups fourteen settlements with 278 inhabitants. In Escaló the Romanesque monastery of San Pedro del Burgal is preserved, along with an 11th-century castle with a watchtower; in Escalarre, the Romanesque sanctuary of Santa María de Aneu; and in Estarón, a church whose Romanesque paintings are now displayed in the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
Monastery of Sant Pere del Burgal
Monument
The monastery of Sant Pere del Burgal, within the area of the village of Escaló, in the municipality of la Guingueta d'Àneu, stands in ruins above the Àneu valley, next to the Sant Pere ravine, at the foot of the Roc del Gento. Documented since the year 859, it became linked in the 10th century to the monastery of Gerri and later came under the French abbey of La Grasse, protected at once by the comital house of Pallars and the local nobility. The current building dates from this period, the 11th century, with a basilical plan with three naves and an apse flanked by two apsidioles with blind Lombard arcading; in the apse the portrait of Countess Llúcia de la Marca was preserved as protector of the monastery, an exceptional case in Romanesque Catalonia. It was secularised in 1570 and, after the disentailment of 1835, was reduced to a simple chapel.
Church of Santa Maria d'Àneu
Monument
The church of Santa Maria d'Àneu is what remains of the monastery of the same name, on the left bank of the Noguera Pallaresa, in the municipality of la Guingueta d'Àneu. Documented since 839, it may have originated as a Visigothic monastic community; the current building, from the 11th century, was a Benedictine monastery, passed in 1216 to an Augustinian chapter and was dissolved in the 18th century. Today it is known chiefly for the surviving apse of its Romanesque church, the only remnant of the original three-nave plan, with blind Lombard arcading; it preserved in the presbytery wall paintings of seraphim with eyes-covered wings, attributed to the Master of Pedret and now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. It gives its name to the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu d'Àneu, patron saint of the Àneu valleys, whose feast day is 1 May, and it was restored in 2014.
Tower of Escaló
Monument
This medieval watchtower, in excellent condition, dominates the entrance to the Àneu valley from the west, facing the monastery of Sant Pere del Burgal. Together with the vila closa (walled village) of Escaló it formed the castle of Escaló, already mentioned in the 11th century, the centre of the defensive line at the southern entrance to the valley, along with the castles of Escart, Llort, Berrós and Llavorre, la Torrassa and the Castellot d'Estaís. Circular in plan, 6.5 metres in diameter, it preserves an access door at about 8 metres height, which prevents it from being freely visited, crowned by an arch of slate voussoirs, with partly preserved merlons. In 2000 its structure was consolidated, and the archaeological work documented a closing wall added between the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (the highest level of heritage protection in Catalonia).
Gates and Walls of Escaló
Monument
Remains of the walled-town structure of Escaló, enclosed behind its walls, with two surviving fortified gates: one with a projecting bartizan tower at one end, and the other, at the opposite end, which gave access to the village mill and washhouse. Together with the Torre d'Escaló, the watchtower linked to this fortification, they form a single complex.
