What to see and do in Vall de Cardós

Vall de Cardós
Village
Vall de Cardós is a municipality in the Pallars Sobirà, with 388 inhabitants (INE 2025), formed in the early 1970s by the merger of the former municipalities of Estaon and Ribera de Cardós, whose town today serves as the municipal seat and preserves the boundary cross. It groups together the villages of Ainet de Cardós, Anàs, Bonestarre, Cassibrós, Estaon, Lladrós, Ribera de Cardós and Surri, spread across the valley it takes its name from, with access from Llavorsí. In Ribera de Cardós stands the Romanesque church of Santa María; in Lladrós, the church of Sant Pere, with a Baroque altarpiece, and a medieval bridge, joined by another medieval bridge in Cassibrós. In Tavascan there is a hydroelectric power plant. Its economy combines agriculture and livestock farming with tourism.
Wayside Cross of Ribera de Cardós
Monument
Gothic cross from the 15th century on a tall granite pillar, carved from a block of grey llicorella stone, with lobed arms inscribed in squares and decoration of a twisted cord. On the front it shows a crucified Christ, with uneven arms, long hair and exaggeratedly large hands, with the INRI sign above the slightly tilted head; on the back, the Virgin holding the Child in her arms beneath a Gothic canopy, flanked by two coats of arms. It originally marked the boundary of the municipal area in the Forat de Cardós gorge, at the entrance to the valley. Moved to the centre of the village, the original is kept in a display case in Plaça Mn. Cinto Verdaguer and a replica is exhibited near the parish church. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (the highest level of heritage protection in Catalonia) since 1963.

Food and drink
The pine and beech woods of the valleys of Cardós and Ferrera give rovellons, ceps and camagrocs that sustain an autumn cuisine with meat stews and rice dishes. The gathering is regulated in several municipal reserves.
