Church of Santa Maria d'Àneu Monument · la Guingueta d'Àneu, Pallars Sobirà, Lleida The church of Santa Maria d'Àneu is what remains of the monastery of the same name, on the left bank of the Noguera Pallaresa, in the municipality of la Guingueta d'Àneu. Documented since 839, it may have originated as a Visigothic monastic community; the current building, from the 11th century, was a Benedictine monastery, passed in 1216 to an Augustinian chapter and was dissolved in the 18th century. Today it is known chiefly for the surviving apse of its Romanesque church, the only remnant of the original three-nave plan, with blind Lombard arcading; it preserved in the presbytery wall paintings of seraphim with eyes-covered wings, attributed to the Master of Pedret and now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. It gives its name to the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu d'Àneu, patron saint of the Àneu valleys, whose feast day is 1 May, and it was restored in 2014.
